Cake Cone Sundaes

Cake Cone Sundaes@The Seven year Cottage

I’ve been intrigued by this clever concept for as long as I can remember…

Filling plain old store-bought cones with deliciously dreamy cake batter and baking them into amazing specimens of culinary cuteness!

I’m entirely convinced that the sugar-loving individual who came up with it, is in some way related to Einstein.

Perhaps a distant relative?

Cake Cone Sundaes

  • 12 ice cream cones
  • 1-9oz. box “Jiffy” golden yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 16oz. vanilla frosting
  • Red food coloring
  • Gallon-sized zipper bag
  • Rainbow jimmies/sprinkles
  • Old Fashioned Candy Sticks (World Market)
  • Small red gumballs

Pour cake mix, buttermilk, egg, and vanilla flavoring into medium-sized bowl.  With electric mixer, beat for 2-3 minutes on low speed setting.

Stand ice cream cones upright in muffin pan.  Fill each cone with batter approximately 2/3 full.  Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

Carefully remove cake cones from the oven and allow to cool completely.

In a small mixing bowl, stir vanilla frosting and red food coloring until pink.  Transfer to a gallon-sized zipper bag, seal, and snip one corner with a clean pair of kitchen shears.

Pipe pretty pink frosting onto cake cones and decorate by sprinkling with colorful jimmies, then topping with red gumballs and dark chocolate-covered candy sticks.

*This recipe makes twelve captivating cake cone sundaes!

  24. Jennifer says:

Do you have any suggestions on how to transport these??? Would be a fit at our next PTO meeting:)

    • Hollie says:

Excellent question! I would bake them and let them cool ahead of time, mix up the icing and transfer it to a bag, then take all the components and assemble them there. The actual baking process took the longest, but the decorating went very quickly. My daughter even helped with the sprinkles and candy.

  25. I love the way you decorated these, much cuter than any ice cream cone cupcakes I’ve ever made!

Love these! I’ve tried them before with the mini-cones, but mine got really soggy. Did you have that problem too? And if not, how did you avoid it?

    • Hollie says:

Maybe if the batter sits in them too long, they get soggy? I filled regular ice cream cones and transferred them to the oven right away for baking. They cooled fairly quickly, so we decorated and ate them within a couple of hours… nothing tasty ever lasts too long around here!

These are the cutest things! I’m always looking for ideas for my kids to take to school. These will be perfect for their day care class this summer. I also like the idea of using the Jiffy cake mix. I haven’t used one of those in forever but it’s a great idea: makes a small batch and is cheap!

Hi, I make these ALL the time! FYI, there’s a Website called gooseberry patch, they sell special pans to bake these in, where they don’t fall over. I then frost right in them & transport them in them after putting pans with cones into a flat box.
